Revolutionary? Finest ingredients in the world?
Those are some strong words from a soda.


I picked up a 4 pack of Steaz expecting something like Cricket Cola--aromatic, mild sweetness and an astringent finish.

As expected, Steaz ginger ale is mildly sweet.
It's astringency is a hair stronger than expected.
But the aroma, at first taste, was a big surprise.

Classic ginger and green tea notes dominate, but underneath that lurks a musky, smoky quality reminiscent of ginseng, or mushrooms. It's the same earthiness found in some southeast asian chocolates and coffees. Strange but interesting.

Overall Steaz ginger ale is pleasant and the earthiness lends it a complexity uncommon in soft drinks, but on a hot summer day it wouldn't be my drink of choice.

I'd give this one a 5.5 out of 10. Not bad.
